Save Our Barn Gala, Sept. 24, 2010
pimg src=http://www.mydorchester.org/files/clappbarngala.bmp align=right height=150br /
The Dorchester Historical Society is holding a “Save Our Barn” Gala on Friday, September 24, at DHS Headquarters, 195 Boston Street, to raise funds to restore the mid-19th century Clapp Family Barn.br /
Everyone is invited to this evening of merriment, which begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and dinner provided by Gourmet Caterers, one of Boston’s premier event caterers. Musicians from the Dorchester Symphony Orchestra will play during the social hour. The Barn and the Society’s houses and exhibits will be open for viewing. And Ryan Landry, Dorchester-based actor, playwright, and founder of the Gold Dust Orphans, will be master of ceremonies for a vibrant live auction during dinner, followed by dancing.br /
The Clapp Family Barn is one of the few barns remaining in the City of Boston; with the Historical Society’s extensive collection of antique agriculture implements, the building with its long history is an unmatched resource for the study of Dorchester’s agricultural past. Funds will be used for structural repairs and other necessary work.br /
Gala tickets, $150 each ($75 taxdeductible), are available at the A HREF=http://www.dorchesterhistoricalsociety.org/upcoming-events/the DHS website/A or by calling 617-293-3052.br /
The DHS property at 195 Boston Street was well-known in Dorchester history, and was where many varieties of fruit were developed, including the well-known Clapp’s Favorite pear which was developed in 1820 and marketed by 1860. It remains in wide commercial use today. See A HREF=http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/08/22/tough_skinned_pear_a_symbol_of_dorchesters_agrarian_past/this recent Boston Globe article/A about Dorchester's famous pear. /p
